They came, they drank, they took nothing!

A gang of thieves, who had descended on a medical college professor’s house, partied on the cool beer kept in the house, smoked, but left without taking jewellery worth a few lakhs and cash.

The attempt was still daring as the professor’s neighbour is a retired IPS officer. The thieves have swigged beer, and smoked cigarettes in the house, without raising the suspicion of neighbours.

The thieves were so inebriated that they have left antique jewellery worth a few lakhs untouched thinking it was fake, and have not seen cash kept inside the almirah.

The thieves were at the house of Dr Janardhan on Outer Ring Road in J P Nagar Sixth Phase. The doctor’s immediate neighbour is D.N. Munikrishna, who is a retired IPS officer.

Doctor’s wife Susheela runs Sushi’s Beauty Parlour, which is well known in the locality, from the house. The doctor works as an assistant professor at a medical college in Suliya near Mangalore.

The couple had gone to Mangalore on Sunday night. Their children stay in Hyderabad and Ulsoor. The thieves have gained entry by cutting the window grills and ransacked the house.

“They have not taken a Pearl necklace and an antique necklace. They have thrown them outside the almirah, probably thinking that they were fake,” a source said.

The J.P. Nagar police said the incident came to light on Tuesday morning. The thieves could be aware of the couple’s whereabouts, as they have spent a lot of time, checked every corner of the house, drank beer and soft drinks, and smoked before leaving. Ms Susheela had concealed her gold ornaments and Rs 55,000 in the house.

Though the thieves have checked the place, they could not notice it. The police said, “We have found fingerprints of four persons inside the house. Initially we suspected that the Swift Dzire car parked inside the compound had been stolen.

But sniffer dogs followed the trail till where the car was abandoned. The keys were found on the car’s bonnet. The accused have escaped with a laptop, three watches and `4,800 in cash.”
