Thief held, Rs 2.5 cr jewellery recovered
He was a thief on a roll. By the time the East division police caught up with him, he had stolen gold jewellery weighing 9.5 kg worth over Rs 2.5 crore in just 14 cases of theft. Shridar alias Anil Kumar alias Sreekanth (28) is an Industrial Technological Institute pass-out, who had developed the technique of cracking open the locks during his course.
Coming from Bidalapur village in Devanahalli taluk on the outskirts of the City, he would choose a locality and go around the area observing all the houses that were locked. Later, he would select a house that had been locked for over a couple of days and break open the lock in the night and get away with the valuables. Though he had mounds of jewellerly, valuables and cash, he wanted to lead an even better life with his girlfriend Ragini, a housemaid.
He came out with a plan to target a jewellery store and was successful in looting 8 kg of gold and 3 kg of silver from Varun Jewellers in Ulsoor. A few days ago, Ragini was arrested for committing thefts in the houses she worked. City Police Commissioner Jyothiprakash Mirji on Monday said Shridar was convicted and sent to jail for six years for various thefts in the City. He came out in July 2011 and continued with his criminal ways. By the time he was caught in April this year, he had committed 14 thefts.
He was booked for eight cases in Jeevan Bima Nagar, three cases in Indiranagar, two in HAL and one in Ulsoor. Earlier, he was arrested for committing thefts in Ramamurthy Nagar, Jayanagar Hosakote, Devanahalli and Vidya Nagar in Shimoga.
