Tough-talking brings BSY back to the fold
Embattled former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa sprang a surprise on Saturday evening, not only by turning up at the party office, but announcing his decision to campaign for ruling party candidates in the run-up to next month’s polls to the Legislative Council.
Back from Mumbai after attending the national executive meeting on Friday, Mr Yeddyurappa sent party workers into raptures when he ended the uncertainty about his presence at a meeting of the core committee. The workers shouted slogans in his support as he headed straight to the dais and took the chair. He was joined by rural development and panchayat raj minister Jagadish Shettar and urban development minister Suresh Kumar.
At the meeting, Mr Yeddyurappa exhorted party workers to work for the success of all the nominees of BJP, and teach a lesson to leaders of Congress and Janata Dal (S). “I am not an aspirant for posts of Chief Minister or state unit president. I am an ordinary worker of the party. We lost the Udupi-Chikmagalur parliamentary by-election due to our own mistakes. This time, we should teach the Opposition a lesson by winning all the seats,” he reportedly said.
Sources in the party however revealed that the former chief minister shed his belligerent attitude following some tough talking by senior central leaders during the national executive. Mr Yeddyurappa was reportedly told that his twin demands-reinstatement either as Chief Minister or state unit president as well as change of leadership-would not be entertained at this juncture. He was chastised for embarrassing party leaders in Karnataka and New Delhi, the sources added.
