Truckers plan stir against ban in city
The city traffic police are in no mood to give in to transporters’ demand on lifting the ban on movement of trucks inside the city during peak hours. Various transporters’ federations are planning an agitation this week, claiming the movement of trucks has slowed down due to the restriction on goods vehicles in the city and on the outskirts in peak hours.
The traffic police imposed the ban on the movement of heavy traffic vehicles in the city after receiving complaints from the public, especially the IT-BT employees. The commuters had complained that heavy vehicles were causing a number of accidents, causing deaths of innocents. The ban is in place on the Hosur-Tumkur outer ring road stretch. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.A. Saleem said: “The directive to ban heavy vehicles on city roads during peak hours is not new. No heavy vehicles are allowed into the city from 7.30 to 11.30 am and from 4.30 to 8.30 pm. The same restriction extends to the Outer Ring Road as we keep receiving complaints from office-goers about traffic bottlenecks.”
He warned, “We’re not lifting the ban. People not following it will be penalised during the regular checks conducted by us.” President, Karnataka State Truck Owners’ Association, B. Chenna Reddy, said, “We met the traffic chief, but he refused to consider our plea. He is considering the Outer Ring Road as part of the city. Trucks on this road go on long routes and halting them for eight hours is not good for business. We feel the ban should be lifted on the outskirts.”
