Uncleared garbage claims 14-yr-old’s life
Sania Khanum, a 14-year-old resident of Chamarajpet, died of suspected dengue on Saturday morning at KIMS Hospital on Saturday morning.
It is suspected that she would have been infected by dengue because of a huge mound of unattended garbage on the 1st main 4th cross, which is just a few yards from her residence.
She fell sick last week and was being treated at a nearby clinic for fever. Later, she developed an allergy for the medicine and had to be shifted to Shanti Nursing Home in Jayanagar. Her blood test returned positive for dengue, said a relative of Khanum.
Blood platelet supplements did not improve her condition, and she had to be shifted to KIMS for further treatment. The relative alleged that because of doctor’s negligence, she developed multiple complications. She was shifted to the ICU, but she died on Saturday morning.
After the death was reported, the BBMP immediately cleared the garbage and sprayed the spot with pesticides.
But till then, the BBMP had not paid heed to the residents’ requests to clear the garbage. The relative said that had the area been cleared of garbage earlier, Khanum could have survived.
With Khanum’s death, the dengue toll in the city has gone up to 18.
Dr Devaki, BBMP’s chief heath officer, said, “Since there was a mob near her residence, we could not confirm the details of the girl. Our inspectors have been instructed to go to KIMS and collect a detailed report about her death”.
