Wakf report: Cong leaders face heat
The Opposition Congress was up in arms on Monday with the Karnataka State Minorities Commission naming several of its senior leaders for encroaching on Wakf property across the state.
Wakf property valued at more than Rs 2.35 lakh crore-more than the 2G spectrum scam — was allegedly grabbed by several top-notch leaders including former Union ministers C.K. Jaffer Sharief and C.M. Ibrahim, deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha Rehaman Khan, former Karnataka ministers Roshan Baig and Qamar-ul-Islam, Shantinagar MLA N.A. Harris, Mysore legislator Tanveer Sait and JD(S) leader Iqbal Ansari, said sources. The Board has Rs 4.10 lakh crore worth properties across Karnataka with more than half of it encroached upon.
Mr Baig and Mr Sharief were among top leaders who denied the charge. Panel chairman Anwar Manippady who submitted the report to Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda, said 38 people have been indicted for the land grab. They encroached on Wakf land by registering the sale deeds in their name or of their family members, said sources.
