We want to meet our children, say kin

Sakeenabi (55), the mother Mohammed Yusuf, who has been arrested by the CCB for alleged terror links, was unable to control her tears when scores of media mikes were held at her face. She was at the Bengaluru Press Club along with the parents of the others arrested on terror charges.

A sobbing Sakeena pleaded with every journalist to help her to see her son once. “Mujhe apne bachche se milvao” (help me meet my child) she cried even as the relatives of the other arrested youths tried to console her.

“We have no land, house or bank balance. I have lost my husband and Yusuf is my only son. It’s been terrible that I have not heard from him in the last four days. I want to at least meet my son. If police have evidence, then why are we kept in the dark? There is no question of him being involved in such activities. All he wanted to do was work hard and grow up in life. I am sure he never wanted to take an easy way out to come up in life,” she said.

The parents of the arrested accused are upset over the police being tight-lipped about the arrests.

“Our children are innocent and they are being framed. There is no way they get into anti-national activities. There must have been some wrong input by someone,” said Sheikh Rafiq Ahmed Solapuri, an Assistant Conservator of Forest and father of Zafar, who was arrested.

“If the police have evidence, let them come out in the open. By picking up children from their homes and not allowing anybody to meet them is not good. We are trying our level best to reach senior police officers and media members so that we can meet our children,” said Abdul Mirza, father of Aijaz Mirza, who worked with DRDO.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
