‘I can’t emulate Guru Dutt’
Karan Johar may have had several blockbusters to his credit as a producer and director. But according to Karan, emulating the yesteryear legendary director Guru Dutt is next to impossible. He says that he could never emulate stalwarts like Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt, however much he tried. The director says that he would certainly love to remake some of their films.
“I grew up watching films of vintage directors like Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt and it has left an indelible mark on me. I can’t hold the candle to each of them. Our films don’t have the brilliance or the passion they had for celluloid,” says Karan.
He says Guru Dutt was one person he wished to meet in his life. “Unfortunately, I never met him or have no memories of his presence or even being around him. Ask him which Guru Dutt film he would like to recreate now and pat comes the reply, “Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam any day.”
Karan feels that it is important to archive the old classics. “I think we should start archiving these old classics, whether it’s the screenplay or the dialogues. We have the infrastructure and the technical know-how and these are pearls of Indian cinema,” he says.
