‘Priyanka ko sau khoon maaf’
While everyone knows that Priyanka Chopra kills her seven husbands in the highly anticipated Saat Khoon Maaf, the title has led to some amount of speculation that she gets away with all the murders. But director Vishal Bhardwaj clarifies, “It’s not about whether or not she is pardoned. Actually, saat khoon maaf is a popular idiom in our
country. To describe someone’s breathtaking beauty, you might say ‘aapko to saat khoon maaf’. Or, if you do someone a good turn, then they might tell you, ‘jaa, tujhe saat khoon maaf’.”
Vishal admits that he initially found the phrase difficult to explain to his co-writer Matthew Robbins. “I really struggled to explain the meaning,” he says.
An amusing incident however helped Vishal explain what he meant. “We were returning after our Kashmir shoot. The person checking me at the airport suddenly asked, ‘Are you making Saat Khoon Maaf with Priyanka?’ When I said yes, he gushed, ‘Sir, Priyanka ko to sau khoon bhi maaf!’” (Then Priyanka is forgiven a 100 times). — BNS
