Aamir clears the air

After a prolonged delay, Aamir Khan Productions’ next offering Delhi Belly is finally up for a July release. There were strong rumours suggesting that the creative differences between director Abhinay Deo and Aamir caused the delay. But the actor-producer is quick to clear the air: “The rumours that came out about Abhinay and me were untrue.”
Yet, Aamir made sure he sat through the film’s edit and had the last word in this Imran Khan-starrer. Aamir states, “For AK Productions, I always need the final cut. That’s how we work and that is our policy. Final cut stays with the production house.”
Aamir indicates that all the directors who sign up with his production company are aware of this precondition. “We make it very clear right in the beginning when we are signing the writer, director and all the creative heads. They should know and they should feel comfortable that we have that right. Until they are comfortable we don’t move ahead.”
Aamir followed the same routine with Abhinay too. “I asked Abhinay quite a few times if he was comfortable with the conditions. I do that with everyone for all my films,” says Aamir.
However, according to Aamir, having the power doesn’t mean misusing it. He says, “I have the final say and the final cut. But that doesn’t mean that I exercise it all the time. If I am happy with the way Abhinay is working, I don’t need to. I didn’t visit the sets of Delhi Belly even once. During Peepli Live, I had gone for one day, here I didn’t even go once.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
