Abhinav plays it commercially safe
Abhinav Kashyap is all set for the release of his directorial debut Dabangg. The first-time director is very excited about this project. “I’m privileged to have a huge star like Salman in my movie,” he says. The young man didn’t follow in the footsteps of his elder brother Anurag Kashyap, and chose to enter the industry in a commercial way, with full-fledged drama, fights and even an item number.
Ask him about his approach and he is quick to reply, “It was necessary for my career. Everywhere I went with scripts people would tell me they’d rather go to Anurag for such films. The last thing I wanted was competition in my own home. I hated the ‘brothers syndrome’ kind of effect. I realised that he won’t venture in commercial cinema, and that’s the only place I can fill in. Comparison is what bogs you down and people start off with negativity.”
Dabangg again is not being spared from comparisons either, with people comparing it with Salman’s last hit Wanted. “Dabangg is anything, but Wanted. Only the element of action is common. When me and my co-writer Dilip Shukla started writing the first draft, we had no one in mind. But when Salman came into the picture, we made a lot of changes to suit the traits of Salman’s image. In this film, he has a short-hair look which is also very different from Wanted,” he says.
Salman is known for his erratic behaviour and coming late for shoots. But Abhinav defends his lead actor. “He is made a monster for nothing. He has a predicable behaviour, we know what suits him and accordingly we adjust his dates. But let me tell you one thing, when he is on the sets he doesn’t leave without finishing his shoots,” he says.
Speaking of Salman’s contribution at the editing desk, he says, “Yes, he did suggest a lot of changes and so did Arbaaz.”
Abhinav is also in all praises for debutant Sonakshi Sinha. “I’m sure she is going to be the next superstar. She oozes confidence. She has done wonderfully well for her debut movie. She’ll be unlike any other new girl launched in recent times in Bollywood,” he adds.
