Aiyaa in trouble?
It's not been a day since promos of Rani Mukherji’s Aiyya were released, and the film has already kick-started a debate on social networking sites for its attempt at stereotyping South Indians. The promo has Rani confessing that she doesn’t like gore ladke (fair boys) and instead prefers kaala (dark).
She then goes on to share her fascination for South Indians, hence equating dark skinned men to them.
What makes matters worse is the fact that the man (played by Prithviraj Sukumaran), who ultimately manages to sweep Rani off her feet in the film, is actually a South Indian, both by characterisation and origin. “It is rather surprising that he too agreed to step into a stereotypical role like this,” says a colleague of the actor. Well, let’s see how the audience reacts to this stereotyping.
