Akki and I are not buddies: Katrina

Their onscreen chemistry sizzles and yet, a certain comfort level exists between Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. But ask her how her equation with Akshay has changed over the years and Katrina gives a detailed description. She says, “We have been working together for five years now. He plays pranks with everyone on the sets and I’m

sitting in one corner and watching it. I feel lucky if he comes and says hello. I’ll tell you how our interaction has progressed in the last five years. In the first year, he would greet me with a warm hug and a hello, and a good morning ‘wassup.’ In the second year, I got just a pat on the back and a good morning. In the third year, it was just a look and a good morning. And in the fourth year and fifth year, it’s just a look before he turns to the director and asks ‘What is the shot?’ At times, I would feel really hurt and I would march up to him and say, ‘Akshay, good morning. Smile, why are you angry? You haven’t even acknowledged me!’ He would be like, ‘Don’t be stupid. I am not angry’.”
Yet, there is no problem in front of the camera when they are giving a shot. The chemistry and comfort show effortlessly. How does that happen if they are so casual with each other off camera? Katrina says, “I feel you have to be formal with someone when you are not comfortable with them. Like, when I enter the room, I will greet you but I would not greet my manager as I meet her everyday. Remember, I must have spent 400-500 days shooting with Akshay in the last five years. Akshay has a certain amount of trust and faith in me. We are not buddy-buddy but we have a lot of respect for each other. When I’m not shooting with Akshay, there is no exchange of SMSes asking ‘How are you?’ But that’s fine because at times even over friendliness can mar certain things.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
