Akki wants to enjoy his work

Akshay Kumar seems unstoppable. He is working with Sajid Khan for third time in a row after Heyy Babyy, Housefull and now Housefull 2. He is also working with Nikhil Advani once again in Patiala House. After Chandni Chowk To China, which could perhaps go down as one of the most criticised films of his career in the last five years, besides being a blockbuster flop, this seemed like a brave decision to many.
“Let people speculate, for me it is not anyone else’s personal judgement that decides my future course of action, only I take that decision,” says Akshay. “I make so many movies in a year and I want to enjoy my work. Look at it this way, the success of a release barely lasts a few days, but my shooting schedules last for 3-4 months. In fact sometimes, it is even more. I want to work with people whom I enjoy making films with,” he adds.
He adds on a lighter note, “There could be some people out there who could give me mega hits. But then I may want to kill myself during the making. As for Nikhil, I really enjoy working with him. If I didn’t have faith in his work, do you think I would work with him? Now if our film works, it will only make victory sweeter for us, won’t it?”
Akshay maintains that he likes working with people with whom he has shared a rapport in the past and newcomers too. Stating an example, he adds, “Now David Dhawan’s son Rohit is directing me in a film. He is a debutante. I agreed to do that project because I liked the script and Rohit comes across as a very self assured first time director. Eventually, my being in a project depends on what interests me.” So, let’s see if this personal touch works at the box office with his forthcoming films.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
