Akshay’s next sold for a song
Its leading man, Akshay Kumar may have recently had two 100-crore winners at the box office (Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore), but Joker is still being sold to UTV for the relatively small sum of Rs 40 crores, according to trade sources.
And the reason this was possible, they add, is because Shirish made the film on a tight budget.
“Shirish planned Joker in a way that it would be commercially viable to all,” a trade expert commented. “UTV is also excited about the film’s prospects. Unlike Akshay’s earlier offerings, this one didn’t come with too heavy a price tag.”
Confirms a trade insider, “UTV has bought the global rights of Joker at a price less than Rs40 crores and that includes theatrical, satellite, home video, overseas and all other rights. Recovering this amount should be a cakewalk.”
