...And Kangna’s time-travelling ones

If Abhishek Bachchan had to face the snipping scissors, Kangna Ranaut has had to travel back in time for her role in Milan Lutharia’s Once Upon A Life Time.
The film is based on the city’s one-time don Haji Mastan — essayed by Ajay Devgn. Kangna plays his love interest, yesteryear actress Sona who bore a resemblance to the legendary Madhubala. The film explores the growth of the underworld in the city, back in the 70s and 80s.
Rushi Sharma and Manoshi Nath, who have created Kangna’s look in the film, describe it as the complete 70s glam star look. “Kangna has the diva look of the 70s. And her inspirations were Jacqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn. We have given her Jacky’s sunglasses and Audrey’s bouffant. We have also referred to Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi as far as her long, silky tresses are concerned. Milan also gave us a lot of inputs for the look,” they say.
The designer duo is confident that the retro look will be back in vogue after the film releases. “For Ajay, we stuck to the real look of Haji Mastan. He will be dressed completely in white. Yes, the character will be seen in the time span from the 60s to the 70s, so the look will change a little. The 60s era will have him donning cigarette pants. In the 70s he will be seen in bell bottom pants which were tighter at the waist,” says Rushi. As for Emraan Hashmi, the designers have changed his look as he transitions from being a boy growing up on the wrong side of the tracks to a flamboyant underworld character.
But the designers are most satisfied with the way Kangna has carried off the look. Her makeup has been inspired by Sharmila Tagore and Helen.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
