Ash hopes for a hit this time

With Guzaarish, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is looking for a milestone and perhaps, an elusive box office hit. And the lady is well aware, so far Sanjay Leela Bhansali has not disappointed her on that scale. “I said yes to Guzaarish even before he narrated the subject, I have so much faith in Sanjay as a filmmaker,” she pointed out.

Yet, she makes it clear that the audience should look beyond her previous career defining portrayals etched out by the same director and discover Sofia, her character in Guzaarish with a fresh frame of mind. “I admit Paro from Devdas and Nandini from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam are my most identifiable characters on celluloid, but if you will look for their traces in Sofia, then it is not fair to the filmmaker and his creativity.”
Talking about Guzaarish, the actress says, “Guzaarish is a brave, sensitive and unique film — an unconventional love story, where I essay the role of a care giver to Ethan, (played by Hrithik) after an accident leaves him a quadriplegic. I look after him for almost 12 years, although I have my own past, I maintain a stern silence on it. Sofia has an old warm charm about her, and in her own way she tries to bring some colour in the patient’s monotonous existence.”
Talking of Hrithik and Aishwarya in the same breath naturally brings to notice the brilliant onscreen chemistry the two actors shared in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. To that the Bachchan bahu replies, “The chemistry should be on paper, if it is not present in the script, then the actors cannot give life to it.” Reacting to rumours that she was instrumental in removing some of the intimate scenes, as the Bach-chan clan had reservations, she retorts, “I am not a newcomer. Why should I do something that’s uncomfortable and then get it deleted and then offer an explanation? It’s such a senseless thought.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
