Bebo steals the show

Saif Ali Khan’s Agent Vinod is said to be India’s answer to James Bond, an out-and-out testosterone drive with fast cars, faster love and a superhero-like character who runs the show. But the promos show a different scenario altogether. The film poster, for instance, shows Kareena Kapoor in a collage of 11 stills, from a mujra girl to the diva. So were the rumours of Saif running the show in Agent Vinod just a smokescreen, which would later reveal Bebo as the film’s real star?
“This is a very new development and has come as a surprise for many out there,” says an insider. “Have you ever seen a woman holding centrestage in a Bond or a Bourne film? It is always the central protagonist who hogs all the limelight. It is only Kareena who has broken the set rules and ensured she isn’t just a decorative piece.”
No wonder, the poster introduces Kareena Kapoor as Iram, and features her various looks, right from being the mujra girl to a spy to a girl next door and then also the diva that she is known for. Given the wave of popularity Kareena has been riding on, it is undoubtedly her brand name that the filmmakers are wishing to cash in on, refusing to relegate such a big star to a footnote.
“When you have Bollywood’s numero uno heroine in your film, it would be foolish to hide her,” comments a PR expert, adding, “How important is Kareena to the film’s overall scheme of things would be known only after it is released. However, till then you have to take advantage of her superstar appeal.”
One wonders whether Aamir Khan would be as gracious once the promotion of Talaash begins.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
