Bees ka dum
This August marks Akshay Kumar’s double decade in the film industry. It was way back in 1991 that Akshay had gate crashed into Bollywood as a solo hero with his film Dancer. Though the actor won’t be quite celebrating the anniversary with another August release, he plans to wrap up the significant 20 years with a bang in November with the release of Desi Boyz.
“The first film that Akshay had signed was Deedar opposite Karisma Kapoor, but it was Dancer that released first in 1991. Although the film didn’t create ripples at the box-office, Akshay was noticed,” says a Bollywood historian. It was only after a year that hard work paid off when Khiladi turned out to be a super hit and Akshay earned the khiladi tag as well. The superstar’s Bollywood journey spans over 100 films now, but he has no elaborate plans of celebrating his 20-year stint in the industry. “The fact that I am still here is cause for celebration everyday. I have cherished every moment in every film through all the highs and lows. Of course it has been quite a journey and I will definitely raise a toast to my 20 years, but I don’t want to make too much noise about it,” says Akshay.
Prod him on why he wants to keep the celebrations low key, and the actor replies, “Well, I have learnt from my peers that it’s fine to be happy with 20 years of success, but the real deal is when you clock a 40-year-stint. That’s the moment when you should be really proud of yourself. I feel I am still a beginner when compared to someone like Mr Bachchan.” Now those are some real high standards for the khiladi!
