Boy always at your service

This is the story of actors and their “Boy” or rather the “Boy” kind of behaviour or as I would call it the “Boy complex.” First things first, to understand the “Boy kind of behaviour” one has to understand what or who is a “Boy?” Simply put the boy is an attendant of the actor. He is the one who holds the umbrella over the actor’s head in

rain and shine, he is the one who will take care of the huge amount of stuff that the actor carries with him or her wherever they go, he is the one who will order the production to get fruits and juices and chocolates or whatever that an actor needs to get past the day and he is the one who will take money from the producer to make the actor’s life comfortable.
The “Boy” is very important when the actor travels because he will check the actor in at the airport, look after the bags, pack, unpack and then again hold the umbrella and other such activities as mentioned earlier. No, the actor is not disabled. The actor is a star and a star deserves star treatment. If you find a hint of sarcasm here, then perish the thought. I am not being sarcastic at all. Are we not used to domestic help? And are we not used to someone washing our clothes and ironing our shirts and cooking our food? So, if we have the star getting some help then what is the problem? No problem. Only that the producer does not pay for our domestic help and we pay him but then again that is not the substance of this piece.
This is piece is about two kinds of stars. One, the stars who are stars regardless of the producer and the others who are stars only on the producer’s money. That is the point of this piece. I have seen both the kinds. There are stars who would not take a ‘Boy” with them when they go on a holiday on their own money. Why? Take him no? Who is then going to check you in or pick your bag, even if it is a shopping bag? This is “Boy” kind of behaviour.
I believe a star is how he or she decides to live regardless of who is footing the bill. I have seen stars travel with their “Boys” and whatever they need to be happy even when they are travelling on their own expense. That to my mind is stardom. Real stardom.
To be a star at someone else’s expense is not stardom but exploitation. To grab whatever is on the plate because you are not paying for it, is not stardom but behaviour that befits people with a severe “I-am-deprived-of-all-good-things-in-life” complex. That, my dear friends is the “Boy Kind of behaviour or Boy complex.”
There are people who live life King-size regardless of what they earn and then there are people who will remain wanting for more, regardless of how much they have.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
