Chennai Express and OUATIMD create ripples
For films releasing in the month of July, the box office will prove to be a crowded space indeed. With two big projects — Chennai Express and Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai Dobara — scheduled to arrive within a week of each other in August, about 15 smaller films have squeezed themselves in for a release before these biggies arrive.
“Since the Shah Rukh and Akshay Kumar starrers are expected to dominate August, no other filmmaker will risk releasing their films during the Eid and Independence Day holidays. The only film that is perhaps scheduled for an August arrival is Satyagraha. This is what has caused the massive ‘pile-up’ in July,” said one trade analyst.
The high profile releases in July include Lootera, Policegiri, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and D-Day. But the sudden influx of many smaller films — B.A. Pass, Shorts, Sixteen, Issaq among others — was unexpected. “It’s box office suicide,” says a trade expert, referring to the myriad smaller releases.
With 20 films slated to release within a span of four weeks, is this a disaster waiting to happen?
