Cricket without borders
We’ve seen Shah Rukh Khan in his avatar as the owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL team. Now, we may very well see SRK as the captain of the Indian team in Sri Lanka. No, SRK is not looking to switch careers. Rather, it is rumoured that he will head the Indian side in a celebrity match, as part of the Iifa ceremony to be held in Sri Lanka this June. The event will be hosted by Jacqueline Fernandez.
When quizzed, Wizcraft International Entertainment director Sabbas Joseph said, “We can’t reveal the details now. We are still working on them, but wait and watch — it’s going to be an interesting match.”
The proceeds from the match will be given to Habitat for Humanity, towards rebuilding a village that was devastated by the tsunami, and rehabilitating all the refugee residents. Each resident will also be provided a solar cooker and lighter.
The proceeds are also to be used for rehabilitating child soldiers. “These child soldiers have borne the scars of war, and will now be educated, cricket-trained and get an opportunity to participate as volunteers,” says Joseph, adding, “Sri Lanka is our neighbour. Their culture is similar to ours. They enjoy cricket and cinema. We didn’t get to know much about our neighbours because of the 30 years of war. But now there is an opportunity to invest and expand. It will also open new doors for Indian cinema: we can shoot, co-produce.”
