Don 2 is here, as is the hype
Don 2, which releases today, will have great expectations riding on it, not only because of the legacy of its franchise, but also the track record of its makers, still riding high on the success of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
“Well, people are really expecting it to be a huge entertainer. As for the expectations, I am not saying whether it will be good or bad if they are really high. After all if you look at 3 Idiots, it also carried the huge burden of expectations and still delivered in such a fantastic manner,” says producer Ritesh Sidhwani, seemingly unperturbed by all the hype around the film. “Whenever the audience is excited about the core set-up of a movie and its characters, there are bound to be higher expectations.”
Also, it is coming nearly six years after the first instalment, which released in 2005, a gap that might be a little too long in today’s world of short memories. Didn’t they think of bringing it a little earlier? “We were busy with the making of other films — including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Game — and so was Shah Rukh with Ra.One. Nevertheless, the fact remains that Don 2 is a film to look forward to,” Ritesh adds.
He further draws a parallel with the Spiderman franchise. “I know the basic storyline but I’m still quite excited about the next film. There are bound to be great expectations from that too. Similarly, if there is a bigger gap between the two films in the Don franchise, I expect it to work in our favour,” he says.
