Ekta names he who must not be named
Much like Harry Potter was unafraid to call Lord Voldemort by his name, in her upcoming film with Sanjay Gupta, Shootout At Wadala, Ekta has decided to call the character based on dreaded gangster Dawood Ibrahim, Dawood. After using made-up names for her characters based on smuggler Haji Mastan (in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai) and encounter specialist A.A. Khan (Shootout At Lokhandwala), Ekta has decided to go the “real” route with SAW.
“Yes, it is a huge risk,” Ekta admits. “But Sanjay has assured me that if the underworld strikes, he’ll take the first bullet!”
On a serious note, Ekta adds that she is aware of the threatening phone calls certain other filmmakers have received because of the films based on certain unsavoury personalities. “I’m taking the risk and will deal with the repercussions when the time comes. We’re taking the risk just so that the audience will have that connection with the character. It’s not to make the character larger than life,” she says.
