Everybody has bad days: Punit

Debutant director Punit Malhotra is numb. If that wasn’t enough, he’s “blank” too. The cause? All the praise and appreciation he has received from his mentors after screening his first film I Hate Luv Storys, for them. The film stars Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor

While there has been a lot of buzz about the film, the news of his off screen affair with Sonam has also been doing the rounds. “Everybody has been talking about it. We were a young team and bonded well on the sets. I guess that sparked off the rumours. Now that we are no longer shooting, no one is talking about us. Such rumours die their own death so I don’t wish to react. All that I have on my mind right now is the release of the movie. Sonam is a wonderful actress. I think she is underrated as an actor,” says Punit.
Imran also has Punit’s vote of confidence despite his earlier films Kidnap and Luck not doing well at the box office. “It’s unfair to judge an actor because his films did not do well. Everybody has bad days and I am hoping for his sake and mine that the film will do well,” says Punit.
Punit, who is designer Manish Malhotra’s nephew, says that his uncle guided him throughout the making of this movie. “He has always been my mentor and guide. Manish uncle knew that I wanted to become a director. He was the first person who read my script and told me I should go ahead and do it. He watched the film and liked it. I thought he would be biased but he gave me his feedback saying that he really appreciated it,” says Punit.
Punit started his career as director Karan Johar’s assistant on Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. “Yes I worked with him for 10 years. He asked me to direct a film long ago but I was not ready. I told him that the day I wrote my script, I would direct the film. When I wrote I Hate Luv Storys I approached him. It took him three days to read the script and within 10 days everything was finalised. Karan never interfered on the sets. He said that he wanted the Punit flavour in the movie,” says the young director.
What next, we ask Punit. “There are a thousand ideas in my head but at this point I am too numb and excited to think of anything else,” he says. — SB

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
