Grand Masti is a big hit

Despite the controversy surrounding it, Grand Masti has had a good opening at the box office. The Indra Kumar directed film was predicted to be one of the top 10 big weekend releases, but has comfortably made it into the top-five releases instead. The film managed to make a cool `40 crores on the weekend — leaving behind previous adult content films such as Raaz — The Mystery Continues (`36 crores) and Vidya Balan-starrrer The Dirty Picture (`30 crores). This is particularly impressive since the film has no big stars and a bunch of newcomers instead.
John Day, that released on the same day as Grand Masti, received the most critical acclaim, but unfortunately made a measly `1.5 crores. Vikram Bhatt’s Horror Story too, made only a little more and managed to rake in `2 crores. Horror as a genre is Vikram’s forte, but it didn’t seem to translate too well at the box office this time.
