Grandmother of all coincidences
It’s well known that Emraan Hashmi has been a fan of Sanjay Dutt’s work and was glad when a chance to work with him in the Karan Johar production Unglee came up. But what not many know is that Emi and Sanju share a deeper connection as well.
“Emraan’s grandmother had played Sanjay Dutt’s onscreen grandmother in Naam more than 25 years ago. Her name is Purnima and she is related to Mahesh Bhatt. When the director was making the film, he roped her in for a small but an important part. In fact, she was a veteran actress and had acted in 80-odd films, her last notable one being Ajay Devgn’s Phool Aur Kaante,” an industry expert tells us.
At that time, Emi was quite little and could hardly have known that the Unglee collaboration was in the offing years hence. “I remember hopping over to Sanjay Dutt’s place to watch movies since we stayed close by. It was only a lot later in the day that I realised that my grandmother and he had also acted together,” recounts Emraan with a smile.
Now that he and Sanju baba are working together, Emi says he’s over the moon about the association. “He is a chilled out guy and for a film like Unglee, which has such fresh appeal, it only adds to the fun. After my grandma, it is time for me to take the legacy forward,” says Emraan.
