H’wood glamour inspires style
As the niece of yesteryear actress Anita Raaj and granddaughter of veteran actor Jagdish Raaj, Sonaakshi Raaj is no stranger to the world of glamour.
Yet, when she presented her debut collection at the Lakme Fashion Week recently in the Talent Box segment for upcoming designers, she admits there were pangs of anxiety aplenty. “Nevertheless it all fell into place,” says an elated Sonaakshi. “Once I saw the way my collection had turned out, I was quite confident and excited about revealing it to the audience.”
Her family’s roots may be in Bollywood, and she even had B’town actor Isha Sharvani as her showstopper, but Sonaakshi drew on old Hollywood glamour to create her retro designs. “I felt there was a dearth of Western couture designers in India, and that led me to think of my own line, which would marry Western couture with a hint of ’60s vintage. That’s how “Old Cinema Glamour”, my collection came about,” Sonaakshi says.
Feminine silhouettes comprising voluminous dramatic gowns in ivory, charcoal, aubergine infused with fabrics such as organza, tulle, and net formed the mainstay of Sonaakshi’s line and chanelled the oomph that was so much a part of vintage Hollywood glamour. “The designs are all about flattering silhouettes; young girls with a sense of style are all my muses,” Sonaakshi explains, admitting that she has always admired the way Audrey Hepburn dressed, and that the legend personifies her design philosophy.
