Hema not a fan of item numbersHema not a fan of item numbers
She is the original Dream Girl of the film industry, so when Hema Malini says something, people listen.
But she is rather angry today with the way films are being made and promoted, and the manner in which actresses gyrate themselves in “item songs”. Saying that doing item songs clearly reeks of desperation, Hema takes potshots at leading contemporary actresses like Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, who have made item numbers such an integral part of any mainstream movie, that it has opened up an altogether new rat race of sorts to see who can dance to the most chartbusting “item song”.
“I think mainstream actresses shouldn’t do item numbers,” says Hema, a proponent of the Indian classical dance, and one who has been trying to draw focus to this genre’s techniques. “I feel that item numbers should be done by those actresses or dancers who specialise in it. Mainstream actresses should concentrate more on their acting and stick to that.”
