How Akshay got his heroine

One rather strange thing was noticed in the promos of the upcoming Rohit Dhawan film Desi Boyz. Experienced A-listers like Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone aren’t paired opposite each other, that honour instead going to their far more inexperienced counterparts — Chitrangada Singh and John Abraham.
“Akshay and Deepika have worked together in Chandni Chowk To China and Housefull. So when they were cast again for Desi Boyz, people just assumed they would be paired opposite each other again. However, Rohit’s plans surprised everybody,” says a crewmember.
The rationale behind the pairing lies in the storyline. While John’s love story is a younger one, Akshay is shown to be in a serious and mature relationship. Given that Chitrangada has a far more serious image than Deepika, it made sense to swap the leading ladies.
“While writing the film, I wondered about the logic of pairing Akshay opposite Deepika. Just because they have worked together in a couple of movies before, I didn’t want to repeat them again. I instead wanted a certain freshness,” says Rohit, confirming the news.
