A hypocritical world

Persona non gra-ta. Fully unacceptable or unwelcome, especially to a foreign government, that of course is a term used in diplomacy and used in the realm that is not supposed to concern me but it is a term that applies to all of us in the entertainment industry. Unwelcome. That is us.

“What rubbish!” I hear my daughter saying as she peers over my shoulders as I write this piece, and what rubbish you may say as you read this piece. Everyone loves stars and everyone loves the people from the glamour world, and everyone wants to be friends with them, mingle with them and take pictures with them. True, I agree. People love the glamour that surrounds us but now take this situation under consideration.
A boy from a rich family brings home an actress for dinner and everyone is happy with that and proud of him. Then very softly he tells his parents that he wants to marry her. You think they are still happy? I have been witness to a situation where they have not been very happy. After all look at all these rumours about the girl. She has been linked with so many heroes and she has even worn a bikini on screen! No! No! No! Heartbreaking for someone like me, were you just not so proud to be in her august company a while back?
We are the most loved, I am sure but where morals are concerned we are treated as the social pariahs. We are supposed to be good from far but far from good. The entertainment pages of the newspapers have done their bit and every little part of our lives is up for grabs whether true or untrue. So then we are the only ones who are having affairs and we are the only ones into a fast life and the only one who indulge in intoxication?
This is my analogy for the world we live in. It is a dark theatre with hundreds of people sitting there in the dark and digging their noses, (Yup disgusting but the only analogy that works) and then there is a person on stage with a spotlight and the person on whom the spotlight falls is caught digging his nose and everyone else in the dark makes these sounds of horror and disgust and yet they don’t stop what they are doing.
The world is filled with people who do everything and probably worse things than people in the show business and yet the spotlight falls on us and we are the industry with loose morals and thus the moral of the story my friends is have fun but don’t get caught. Lest you want to be the Persona Non Grata.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
