‘I am not competitive’
In yet another attempt to beat being typecast, Abhay Deol plays a 40-year-old South Indian bureaucrat in Dibakar Bannerjee’s political thriller Shanghai. The actor says he never had an issue with the age of a character. “I don’t want to limit myself. I want to do everything,” he says. Abhay feels this is the best film yet by Dibakar. “I liked the script, the look and lot of other things about the film,” he adds.
Abhay likes the way his character breaks the stereotype of South Indians. “We have always done that in our films so I wanted to get the accent right, without being stereotypical. And to get the physicality right, I just followed my director’s instructions,” he says. Contrary to industry rumours, Abhay says he doesn’t care for competition from his fellow actors. “I am not a competitive person at all. I choose to play a part that cannot be played by others and don’t take up a part that cannot be played by me,” he says.
