‘I can mould Ajay in any character I want’

Basking in the glory of yet another super-hit film — his fifth consecutive hit — Rohit Shetty says that his films reflect his personality.

Q Did you expect Singham to become such a big hit?
Honestly, the feeling hasn’t sunk in as yet. Singham catered to the masses. There haven’t been many recent films made on a cop and villain story.

Q Salman Khan’s Dabangg was also along similar lines.
I spoke to Ajay about Singham during All The Best. We started working on it even before Dabangg started. And besides, they are two different films. Yes, the cop element was the same but then again, how different can a cop look in our country? He will wear khakee, will have a moustache and will wear black Ray Bans.

Q The industry thrives on camps and cliques. You too seem to have found your camp.
I always keep Ajay in mind when I’m writing a character. I can mould him in any character and he just goes with the flow. He doesn’t question my vision and if I ask him to do a scene in a certain way, he just takes it from there. So there is a definite comfort level, but I do want to work with other actors too.

Q When are you starting work on Golmaal 4?
For now, I’m working on Bol Bachchan. Golmaal 4 is also being worked out; it has become a franchise, so I can’t make a sub-standard film in haste. Kareena, Tusshar and every one from the film have also been asking me about Golmaal 4. I’ll start the film as soon as my script is in place.

Q How has your family reacted to your superstar director status?
I’m a very normal guy who lives with his mother, wife and kids. For them, I’m a son, husband and father. They don’t take my stardom seriously. Guess what the so-called superstar director was doing yesterday? Changing bulbs!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
