I hate term ‘item number’: Vidhu
Two-and-a-half years after the thumping success of 3 Idiots, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is ready to roll out his next production Ferrari Ki Sawaari which will hit the theatre screens in June.
The concept of the film came to director Rajesh Mapuskar’s mind during the dubbing of Munnabhai MBBS, but it took nearly eight years for the film to hit the screens. Explaining the delay, Vidhu says, “Irrespective of the time it takes, I need to be sure of each and every aspect of my film. We took nearly four years to write Ferrari.”
Curiously, the film doesn’t have a leading actress opposite Sharman. “When Parinda released, a distributor came up to me and said, ‘Sir picture toh dabba hogi, Jackie Shroff ki toh heroine hi nahin hai. But then we all know what happened,” says Vidhu, adding, “We don’t make films for leading men and women or item songs. We believe in making good cinema.”
Speaking of item numbers, doesn’t Ferrari too have Vidya Balan doing a lavani number in a guest appearance? “I hate the term ‘item number’. To me, when a film has an item number, it means the film is dheeli (lose). So you go to watch only the item. But that is not what Vidya Balan is there for in this movie,” he says.
