I have huge issues with trust, says Kajol

Q You are that rare actress who has enjoyed continuous success in Bollywood for almost two decades now. It can partly be attributed to your intelligent choice of films. How do you pick the winners?

I always believe it is not only a script. You might have a good script, but if you have a bad director or a terrible producer, you know that the film will never be complete or will never be released.

Q Do you feel any pressure about raising your daughter — iski mummy toh yeh karti hai? How do you deal with it?
Every mother feels that. Cooking has been a huge part of being a mother. I think kids have it in their heads that their mothers are super chefs of the first order, but I don’t cook. Fortunately, I have proved my worth in other ways. So I don’t feel bad about not cooking for my child everyday.

Q Would you ever trust anyone with your children?
Never. I have huge issues with trust. There is no way I would trust my baby with anybody. But then, you do have third parties like a nanny and of course, there is my sister, my mother, my mother-in-law with whom I can trust my children without a second thought. But no one can take care of my children as I can.

Q Are you a strict disciplinarian with your kids?
There is something called a mother’s voice. It’s God’s gift to mothers; and thank you God for it! He probably thought: ‘Since there is nothing you can do to control your kid, I give you this’. Most children respond to this mother’s voice and it comes instinctively to you. When you are playing a mother’s character in the film, you are instinctively doing what a mother does.

Q You sound like you must have been a boisterous child. Did you listen to your mom’s voice?
I did, I did, and I still do! My mom has this whistle and when she blows it, my head goes up. If I’m anywhere in a 200 metre vicinity, I rush towards her the moment I hear it. She has trained me very well. I hope I train my children that well.

Q And would you say you have trained Ajay well?
Haven’t I trained him well … nobody can say I have trained him badly.

Q Does Ajay pamper you?
He is very understanding husband and a fantastic father.

Q Is it easier or more difficult when Ajay and you work together?
We are both very professional in that respect. Whenever we are on the sets, we are co-actors or he is my director and I am his actor. After we reach home, I’m the wife and he is the husband.

Q Has your love for each other changed over the years?
We are very much in love; the way we were when we were courting.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
