‘I shudder to go in front of the mike’

Everybody knows that megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been quite a hit in playback singing too. Over three decades his voice has created many chartbusters, right from Mr Natwarlal (1979) to his most recent Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap.
But the ever-modest Amitabh confesses that he’s still nervous while recording for a song. “We are not singers and I still shudder to go in front of the mike to sing a song.” But he also says that sometimes he feels compelled to employ his singing voice in films. “Music directors sometimes feel that it lends a lot more to the character and that cinematic moment if the artist can sing himself. There are many actors nowadays who sing their own song. It’s to convey something genuine,” he says.
