It’s masala all the way
An indifferent 2011 means the next 12 months acquire even more importance as far as Abhishek Bachchan is concerned. He’s got Players and Bol Bachchan lined up for release, two films which are squarely in the commercial entertainers genre.
Abhi says he’s clear about wanting to stick to this genre and not experiment too much with his choice of films. “He’s done with movies that stretched him as a performer but didn’t fetch great results,” informs a close associate, “Be it Dum Maaro Dum, Game, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey or Raavan, they all seemed wonderful on paper and had something different to offer. But all suffered at the box office.”
“Obviously he wants to change now. He has been experimenting for way too long, even before these films came along. For instance, Paa and Delhi 6 also played with genres. He feels it’s now time to play safe and bag some hits,” the associate continues.
Abhi himself admits about upping the masala quotient. “Abbas-Mustan aren’t trying to change the face of cinema; they want to entertain and they want to think commercial. Period. Even Players is as ‘masala’ as it gets. Though it’s a remake of a Hollywood film, it’s been given a desi tweak to suit our sensibilities,” he says.
“Going conventional should suit him for the year ahead,” a trade expert says.
