Love triangles return to invade Bollywood again
Don’t blame yourself if the next few Bollywood films you watch give you a distinct sense of déjà vu. There are close to half a dozen films that are slotted for release with a recurring love triangle theme about them. “This is unprecedented,” says a Bollywood historian. “I have never seen so many similar movies hitting the theatres back to back. Though the treatment, I’m sure, would be different in each of these films, it does suggest that the love triangle formula is back.”
A quick glance at the films in question — Not A Love Story, Bodyguard, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Hum Tum Shabana and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster — suggests that they are of vastly different genres. “Each of the films offers a new perspective,” says a trade guru. “For instance, while Not A Love Story is about a woman who aids one lover in killing another, My Brother Ki Dulhan has Imran falling in love with his brother’s fiancé.”
And if you thought that was enough, there’s more. “Though not much is yet known about Soundtrack, it does have Rajeev Khandelwal, Soha Ali Khan and Mrinalini Sharma forming a triangle. Also, there is Tell Me O Khuda, which has Arjan Bajwa, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Esha Deol, although we don’t know if it’s a love triangle,” an industry insider adds.
