Ranbir out of the date game
In Bollywood, the superstar status of an actor can be judged from the clout he holds over the release dates of his films. So if Salman Khan has made the Eid period his own, Aamir likes to reserve Christmas, and Shah Rukh Khan likes the Diwali phase for his films. In fact, even the youngsters are getting into the act now. Imran Khan, considering the summer months lucky, releases his films in July, while Anushka Sharma shows a preference for December after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baajaa Baraat and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl.
“A superstar’s status is established from the mere fact that the audience expects his film to appear on a certain date or time period,” says a trade expert.
The only exception, it appears is Ranbir Kapoor. The half-a-dozen or so films that he’s done have all had varied release dates, and even for the upcoming Rockstar, there were quite a few changes in the release date before they finally zeroed in on 11/11/11. Though this is indeed a special date, Ranbir insists that it wasn’t planned this way. “Guess we got lucky to even get this date. And since I’m no superstar, I can’t expect to get a release on Eid, Diwali or Christmas. So I better be happy with what I get,” says Ranbir in a surprisingly modest vein.
