Saif to star in gangster flick set in UP

It isn’t just Sanjay Dutt who is exploring the underworld of Uttar Pradesh with Zilla Ghaziabad.

Bollywood’s favourite Casanova Saif Ali Khan would be stepping into the zone, what with a film being planned with Tigmanshu Dhulia.

“Yes, Saif and Tigmanshu are all set to begin this film which would be telling the story of the underworld in Uttar Pradesh. Years after Omkara, Saif would be stepping into the heartland of India all over,” confirms our source.

After the success of Cocktail one would have assumed that the actor would be happy to continue with his lover boy image. However, he has ended up throwing a surprise by stepping into something diametrically opposite.

“For how long can he continue to do romantic films?” questions a close associate, “Yes, Cocktail has worked but that doesn’t mean that romance is the only way for him. What else explains the fact that he is also doing Race 2 and Go Goa Gone alongside his lover boy sagas.”

Meanwhile, there are also murmurs that Saif’s part in the Dhulia affair would be designed on the lines of the iconic character Langda Tyagi since he was much loved in that part.

“Saif is against that though,” our source continues, “Even though there was a mention of Langda Tyagi, Saif was sure that he wasn’t going to repeat the part. Yes, the film is set in UP but a different shade has to be brought to Saif's characterisation in the film. Tigmanshu is working around that.”

When contacted, Saif confirmed that there is a film on the anvil with Tigmanshu but didn’t reveal any further details. All he said was, “Yes, the film has an underworld setting in UP but I am not playing Langda Tyagi again.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
