Shahid almost wasn’t on this film’s poster

Rajkumar Santoshi’s Phata Poster Nikla Hero may well be the film that gets Shahid Kapoor back to the top of his Kaminey-era game, but the film was originally meant to star Ranbir Kapoor.
In a curious twist, Ranbir’s film with Santoshi, Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani, was supposed to have starred Shahid.
“Apparently, Shahid was Santoshi’s first choice for Ajab Prem, but with the former being busy with his Kismat Konnection, the filmmaker ended up reaching out to another ‘promising newcomer’ — Ranbir,” an industry source informed us. While Ajab Prem went on to become a box office hit, Kismat Konnection did moderately well.
Santoshi then decided to write his next film — Phata Poster — for Ranbir. However, this time round, Ranbir had already committed his dates to Besharam and Barfi! so Santoshi ended up approaching Shahid for the project.
“That’s true,” said Rajkumar Santoshi, when we contacted him. “Shahid had impressed me since Ishq Vishk. I loved his performance in Vivaah and Jab We Met. Now he has an author-backed role in Phata Poster Nikla Hero.”
