Solo success after 25 years for Irrfan
Despite the critical acclaim he’s garnered, Irrfan Khan hadn’t delivered any solo commercial hits in his Bollywood journey so far. Now, the actor who brought in his 50th birthday this year, is finally tasting that elusive box office success with Paan Singh Tomar.
“Irrfan has been playing character roles, negative roles and supporting and parallel leads in his 25-year-long career. But he has never been considered a leading man who could pull the audience in on his own. With Paan Singh Tomar, he’s achieved just that,” a trade veteran commented. “The box office reception that films like Billu Barber, Maqbool, Rog etc (in which Irrfan was the protagonist) received merely cemented that notion.”
But, “der aaye durust aaye” is how Irrfan says he chooses to see his late solo success. “Maybe I am going through a reverse cycle,” he jokes.
On a serious note he adds, “More than my own success, I am very happy that a film like this is being seen. It is clear that the world has joined the race that Paan Singh Tomar ran. My heart goes out to his family; their story deserved to be heard.”
