Sonam unwilling to be typecast
If it was Deepika Padukone last year, who had an eventful year with five releases, it’s Sonam Kapoor’s turn this year. After her good luck started with Thank You, she will now be seen in Mausam and Players. Rather than a sense of monotony, however, she is quite happy about experimenting with her look and performance with every film.
“It has been a deliberate decision on her part to jump across genres with each of her films. She doesn’t want to get typecast in the quintessential boy-meets-girl love story. If that was the case, she wouldn’t have started off with unconventional films like Saawariya and Delhi 6 where she didn’t play glamorous roles,” informs a friend of Sonam’s and a steady companion throughout her Bollywood journey.
Last year, however, Sonam was seen only in the glam doll avatar in both her releases: I Hate Luv Storys and Aisha. “Of course, there were varied reactions, but Sonam was sure she didn’t want to take the routine route. This is also the reason she chose a comedy in Thank You, a love story Mausam and a thriller in Players,” says a casting director.
Admitting that it’s her deliberate decision to experiment, Sonam says, “I am doing a performance-oriented role in Mausam and a tomboy in Players. I want to prove that I can do varying roles across genres, also — I can play a Delhi socialite and a housewife with equal élan. I can play a Punjabi belle and be a hot teenager as well. I want to just become better with every movie.”
