‘Soojit saw the talent in me’
Nargis Fakhri, who is excited about her next film Madras Café, hopes that it will help re-launch her career. “I play a war journalist in Madras Café. It is an intense role; the gunshots and bombs make a fearful scenario,” says the actress.
Speaking of her director Soojit Sircar, Nargis adds, “Soojit tried to present my character Jaya very meticulously. We attended workshops to learn our roles. I would also listen to BBC News, CNN and also watched a few war documentaries to get into my character.”
Madras Café is her second film and Nargis feels lucky so far. “I think I’m blessed. I never expected to get such a wonderful reception in Bollywood. For my first film Rockstar, director Imtiaz Ali saw my picture and he could visualise me as the character he was looking at.” About her Madras Café co-star John Abraham, she adds, “I am sure all the girls will be jealous of me. It was great working with Ranbir Kapoor first and then with John; both are lovely people.” Nargis hardly knew John before working with him. “I was a bit apprehensive about John at first as I did not know him. But he turned out to be very helpful and nice and made me comfortable,” she says.
Her directors have been very supportive too. “Both Imtiaz and Soojit advised me on how to perform intense scenes. I feel the communication between you and your director has to be perfect. I am a shy girl and they noticed this inhibition in me. But both taught me well. Soojit taught me how to keep my mind still and focussed while Imtiaz taught me how to capture emotional moments as well as take in the lights while enacting a scene. Learning is a never-ending process and I am confident that I will make it in Bollywood,” she adds.
