Tawaif is out of Tees Maar Khan

It’s time to say goodbye to tawaif. After making its presence loud and clear in the promos of Tees Maar Khan, the word tawaif will now be relegated to just a beep when this Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer is screened in theatres. This is in response to a recommendation by the Censor board that wanted to beep the word tawaif as it was found to be offensive.
Not willing to bow down, Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder took the film to the revising board. However, their plea was shot down there as well and now Akshay will be mouthing the dialogue as, “Ki loot-ti izzat bachaana, aur Tees Maar Khan ko qaid karna, dono bekaar hai!
“It’s okay, one can’t help such things,” says Farah Khan who surrendered to the situation to move ahead with her promotional activities, “There were so many other cuts suggested as well. Thankfully, now there are just three cuts in the film. While the word tawaif has been beeped, the other two changes are around a flag and Doordarshan.”
The film has also been granted a U/A certificate though the team of Tees Maar Khan isn’t overtly bothered about that.
“It’s okay, my Main Hoon Naa and Om Shanti Om were also U/A. No worries, I am sure parents would be happy to bring their kids along for Tees Maar Khan,” says Farah. Well, she can afford to do that. After all, the film escaped Censor board’s recommendation around Sheila being beeped from Sheila Ki Jawani. Imagine Ki Jawani. Now it couldn’t have been cheesier than that!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
