Your skeletons will haunt you

Anna Hazare and his cause have been to the people of India what a log of wood is to a drowning man — hope in the times of despair. The confidence that we will survive even if the prophecy for the future is bleak according to a few cynics. Talking about the cynics, I am forced to look at one thing that they say with a shrug of their shoulders. This is just a fad, they say, just some cause-starved youth of the country that needs a cause and then having got a fill of it they move on.

Bollywood, though I abhor the term, we seem to be stuck with it, has its own set of causoholics and the recent Anna Hazare cause saw a lot of them come out in hordes to support the movement. Everyone needs to get rid of the corruption and everyone wants a free society and yet there is one thing to remember and that is if you throw a stone in the water then you cannot escape the ripples and so if you want to fight for a cause you will have to be ready for the retaliation.
Anupam Kher denies having said anything derogatory about the Constitution and yet there are people available to pelt his house with stones and create an issue about it. Is this the rage of the people who feel angry about a comment? Come on! Let’s not be naïve! This is politics. You throw a stone at our house and we shall throw a stone at you and it is as simple as that.
Priyanka Chopra, I believe pledged her support as well and that is a good thing but if you have a finger of tax evasion pointing at you then you better watch it because that will be used in the fight against you.
The problem with celebrities, and by this I mean film celebrities, joining in a fight of this kind is how vulnerable they are in reality. Madhur Bhandarkar had an accusing starlet to deal with and that has just gone away but will be used against him.
When you fight for what is right, then every “perceivable” wrong that you might have done will be questioned and yes, used against you.
This is not about my personal opinion because I feel anyone and everyone has a right to fight for what they feel is right but when you are going to get up and point a finger at someone, you are throwing the stone in the water and ripples there will be. A fight is only a fight by definition if two parties are engaged in it, otherwise it’s merely an onslaught. There will be the actors who will have their films on release and we have seen in the past that films about to release are always vulnerable in a controversy.
To all my friends here I want to say — fight for what you think is right, but know that you are vulnerable and the fight will come to you. If you have the gumption to take that head on, then fight by all means but if you are being part of the mass movement just because the mass movement exists, then pause a moment and think because you are going to be noticed and the spotlight is on you. You won’t be able to disappear in the mass of the mass movement.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
