Zarine stars in her Princess Diaries

She may have tried to break out of the chubby princess mould that she got slotted in with her debut film Veer, but it seems Zarine Khan is right back on square one. In the Tamil film Karikalan, she will once again be playing a historical princess, albeit not a chubby one, Zarine insists.

“Yes, she is playing a princess all over again in Karikalan,” a close friend of the actress confirms. “It is a step in the right direction for her as this one is a biggie with a multi-crore budget. Also, she is the leading lady opposite Tamil superstar Vikram. She has already finished shooting one schedule of this film and will resume after the release of Housefull 2.”
For Zarine it was a tough decision to step into yet another costume drama. After all, her role in Veer didn’t prove to be the most auspicious of starts, and she had to bide her time before her item number Character Dheela (in Ready) and a chance to play one of the four heroines in Housefull 2 came along, her friend says, adding, “However, the makers of Karikalan were insistent that she was the best choice for the role.”
But Zarine insisted that this time, she would not put on any extra weight, as she was required to for Veer. “Yes, this time around I wasn’t accepting chocolates and sweets on a platter!” Zarine laughs. “During Veer, everyone made me eat as I was required to put on weight. I made sure not to repeat that with my new assignment.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
