Air fares under watch

Mumbai, Nov. 30: The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) has set up a tariff analysis unit to monitor route-wise tariff across networks of local carriers at regular intervals to cap excessive fares, the ministry of civil aviation said on Tuesday.

The DGCA has asked airlines to publish tariffs on their websites or two daily newspapers and maintain all records related to fares that can be produced for inspection, the statement said. The watchdog “may issue directions to the airlines in case airlines establish pr-edatory or excessive tariff,” it said.

The civil aviation minister, Mr Praful Patel, said a sudden spike in air fares in India has prompted the sector regulator to issue notices to airlines, and the government would be discussing means to keep fares under check.
