BlackBerry gets Aug. 31 deadline to comply
Giving an ultimatum to BlackBerry maker Research In Motion and telecom operators, the Centre on Thursday set August 31 as the deadline for them to allow security agencies lawful interception of two crucial services — BlackBerry Enterprise Services and BlackBerry Messenger Services, failing which the popular services will be shut down in India.
BlackBerry services like Voice SMS and BlackBerry Internet Service have already been made available to law enforcement agencies.
Union home secretary G.K. Pillai asked Depart-ment of Telecom to tell the service providers that if a technical solution is not provided by August 31, the government will review the position and take steps to block the two services from networks. Mr Pillai conveyed his decision through a letter to P.J. Thomas, secretary, DoT.
