Electronic cos bank on WC to boost sales
Feb 1: With just less than a fortnight to go for ICC World Cup 2011, consumer electronics majors are hoping to cash in on consumers’ cricket frenzy with a whole range of offers.TV majors like Sony, Samsung, Toshiba etc. have come up with attractive offers on their flat panel televisions exclusively for the cricket season.
Most television companies have tied up with set up box makers to boost sales of their television sets. Sony has joined hands with Airtel offering free DTH connection on purchase of its Bravia range of HD sets while Samsung has partnered with Dish TV to provide free DTH packs with their flat panel TV ranges.
“This is the first time the cricket World Cup will be seen in India on High Definition TV. and we hope to sell about 2.5 lakh units of Bravia HD TVs during this season,” says Mr Masaru Tamagawa, managing director of Sony India.
Samsung, on its part, has also tied a zero per cent finance scheme to its DTH offer to propel the sales of its flat panels. “Based on our consumer offers, we are looking at a 100 per cent jump in our flat panel TV sales during the promotion period,” says Mr R. Zutshi, deputy managing director, Samsung India.
“The global LCD TV market is expected to grow strongly in the coming years, and in particular, the Indian LCD TV market will see a phenomenal growth, with an annual growth rate of 68 per cent from FY2009 to FY2013,” says Mr Shigenori Tokumitsu, vice-president, Visual Products Company, Toshiba Corporation. The company recently unveiled its range of Power LED TVs for India.
Retailers too share the same positive sentiment and are confident of a rise in TV sales anywhere between 50 per cent and 100 per cent during the season. “Cricket is one of the major events in India and there is some kind of psychological significance that is attributed to it, especially when India is on the ground. Coupled with this, when there is a good offer from the brands themselves with a national campaign, it is sure to give a push to monthly sales,” says Mr B A Srinivasa, managing director of Viveks.
Though there is a mixed reaction about changing their television sets just to watch cricket on HD, most consumers are game to exchange their old televisions for swanky flat panels if there is real value proposition in these offers.
